Super Bowl Sunday

So, it's Super Bowl Sunday. I don't see what all the fuss is about, at least if you are not a football fan. I hear all types of folks talking about Super Bowl parties but when you ask them what team they are going for they have no idea. lol. So, if you don't even know what team you are going for..... why are you going to a Super Bowl party? Simple, if you go to a Super Bowl party and you don't even know who is playing then you are what some people call a "Free Loader" and an irritant to the people that actually came to see the game. Now, I'm not a big fan of football in general but i like the Super Bowl, mostly for the crazy commercials. I have been to plenty Super Bowl parties with my husband and like i said before i more so want to watch the commercials and I even know who is playing in the game before i go to the party. If a person doesn't take time to at least find out which teams are playing then they have no intention of coming and enjoying the company of friends and/or family. They are only gracing the host/hostess with their presence to get a free meal and free booze. Once they have slithered through the party avoiding conversations as to keep from looking suspicious with the everlasting cup of spirits they leave without even a goodbye and a thank you.

Now, I don't know if this happens to other people in their hometowns but in Detroit, MI this Super Bowl scenario repeats itself as the everyday situation in the hood. You try to accommodate friends with open arms but as always there is someone there to take advantage. That causes you to deny someone that would really appreciate the hospitality you are extending.

Today's economy is depressing in it self. But image living in the only place in the U.S. that is worse off than every where else, Detroit, MI.

There are extremely limited amounts jobs and many attempts to create work for yourself are futile. If you manage to get a job interview, you are definitely on the chopping block with a lot of other potential employees. And when faced with that situation it is experience and credentials that will get you the gold.

Because the job market in Detroit is so competitive nowadays, everyone is enrolling in some sort of academic program. Students registering for community colleges reached a record high for spring. Some schools had to shut down registration because there just wasn't enough resources to accommodate such a high number of students at one time.

In Lu of such circumstances, there are a lot of employers taking advantage of the unstable job market. I lost my job on January 1, 2009 and was not able to draw unemployment like many of the other unemployed individuals that were able to benefit from the extent ion allowed by the Obama administration. I had been actively been searching for work the entire year with no luck until about a month ago. I asked a waitress at the restaurant on the corner of my block if she knew of any openings and she referred me to another restaurant that may be hiring. I caught the bus to the restaurant and left my information with the owner (who seemed a little odd). About a week later i received a phone call to report to work on the upcoming Monday. Now on the same day the owner of the restaurant called me i received a call from a bookstore that i had applied to a few months ago telling me to come in for an interview. So just like that i went from having no job to having two. The interview at the bookstore went well and i was extended a temporary position. I was told to report to work that upcoming Tuesday.

Monday finally arrives and i am excited to start me new job. I was not familiar with the bus line that would get me to my destination so i decided to catch a cab. I was told to come in at 6pm. i caught the cab and arrived at 5:30. I was told to sit and wait for the owner who then came and told me that he would not be needing me to work that day and could i come in the following day at the same time. Now i just caught a cab to this restaurant and he tells me that he has no work for me after calling me and telling me to report to work. I asked if i could be reimbursed for the cab fare and was told that he could not do that.

I reported to the bookstore job the following day and set up a schedule that worked for what i was trying to do. The bookstore job was only for the duration of 2 weeks. I let the restaurant know that i had a second job and that it was only temporary. I called every day trying to get hours. Finally he allowed me to come in for about 3 hours one day and then 4 on another. After that he never called me back or responded to me calls. So finally i got in touch with the owner of the restaurant and asked that if he didn't want to give me any hours could i at least be paid for the hours i did work..... And he told me he doesn't pay for training and that i was being trained for the hours i did work. He also stated that he was trying to make up his mind if he wanted to hire me or another girl.

Now this situation is odd to me because i was called in like i had the job if i wanted it and there was never any mention of non paid training for a position that i am already well experienced in. They had the simplest cash register available and they job duties were straight forward. Any way my point is they played with an unemployed woman's money. I have a family to take care of and i don't have time for employers to take advantage of the fact there are no jobs.

The other thing that bothers me about the job market in Detroit is that most of the jobs that are available are temp jobs. You get to work for 119 days the you are let go. What his does is prevents you from drawing unemployment, becoming a member of any unions or receiving any benefits.

In short the job market sucks in Detroit. Pray for us all.
